Would it surprise you to be told that the health of your body and the health of your mouth are connected? For example, did you know that the color of your tongue can actually show signs of problems with your overall health?

For instance, have you heard of the illness leukoplakia? While leukoplakia is not actually harmful, it may be an indicator that cancer is forming. One sign that you have leukoplakia is a white tongue. You may also have a white tongue if you are suffering from oral thrush, which is a yeast infection in the mouth. Fortunately, you can usually deal with thrush by eating plain yogurt or taking certain medications.

If your tongue turns a bright red or a bright pink color, you could be suffering from a few vitamin deficiencies, such as vitamin B-12 deficiency. Furthermore, a bright red or pink tongue can also be an indicator of more serious issues, like scarlet fever or even Kawasaki syndrome in children. However, if you’re suffering from scarlet fever or Kawasaki syndrome, there will also be a fever present. These issues should both be treated as soon as possible.

Finally, would you be surprised to learn that your tongue can also turn black and fuzzy? You may even think hair is growing on your tongue. These fuzzy-like strands are actually bacteria that have attached to the small bumps on the top of your tongue. You can usually treat this issue by brushing and flossing well.
