For people suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, it is very common to have unrefreshing sleep and ongoing fatigue. (See my blog on fatigue.) “Tiredness” is what most commonly brings people to seek medical care. A Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) can separate physical exhaustion form tiredness of uncontrollable sleepiness. Overnight Polysomnography (PSG) can identify contributing problems from sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, period leg movements, sleep fragmentation or night teeth grinding.

A simple solution to do first is to increase aerobic exercise with improved nutrition will help with wake and sleep timing. (circadian rhythms) Prescription drugs only help in the short term.

No systematic studies have shown that treating sleep movement problems or sleep apnea has improved unrefreshing sleep, fatigue, or pain for people with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.
